Mabulu has been established only recently, but already they have recorded 2 CDs and they have toured extensively in Europe in the summer of 2001. Their success comes mainly from the enthousiasm of the musicians involved as well as from the support from local and international non-governmental organisations (Promusic, Mozambique) and Helvetas (Switzerland) aiming at promoting and revitalising Mozambiquan music and culture. This had become neccessary since, after years of civil war and subsequent floodings, infrastructure, instruments and recording facilities had largely disappeared.
Old stars of Marrabenta music were without work and living in poverty. Mabulu (=dialogue in Shangana) searches to reconciliate the old marrabenta style with rap and hiphop, and they succeed surprisingly well. Singers like Lisboa Matavel (65) and Dilone Djindji (73) were asked to join the young rapper Chiquito.
